Galle is a small city on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, a few hours drive from Colombo. It’s known for Galle Fort, the fortified old city founded by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century. Stone sea walls, expanded by the Dutch, encircle car-free streets with architecture reflecting Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. Notable buildings include the 18th-century Dutch Reformed Church. Galle Lighthouse stands on the fort’s southeast tip.

Staying in the old Galle Fort is a great way to finish your Sri Lanka tour. Allowing your last day or two close to the airport is always handy, ensuring you won't miss your flight! Galle is about 2 hours drive from the airport. The Galle Fort is quite touristy for a good reason, it is historic and very comfortable. Good food, lots of souvenir shops, great views, friendly feel,.... don't miss it!

Koggala Turtle Conservation Project
Just before the Dutch Gallle Fort we stopped at the Koggala turtle conservation project where Ree, one of Sam's favourite Australian guests released a green turtle into the sea. We named the day-old turtle Basil and hope he lives out his full 300 years...

Only 1 in a thousand reach reproductive age. Given a nest may have 100 eggs, they will be hatched by the conservation project and sold to tourists for release at a rate of about 30 per average day. This means all these baby turtles safely get escorted to the water within a 3-4 day period. In nature many do not make it and often it takes a week to get from nest to water exposing them to danger every hour they are exposed on the beach,...
