Just before the Dutch Gallle Fort we stopped at the Koggala turtle conservation project where Ree, one of Sam's favourite Australian guests released a green turtle into the sea. We named the day-old turtle Basil and hope he lives out his full 300 years...
It may seem exploitative, but really, it means people will collect turtle eggs for these Conservation Projects instead of trampling, eating, selling them, which then means the Project sells them to tourists to release and they will have a good head start into life as mortality rate for them to even incubate and get to the water is very high. Only 1 in a thousand reach reproductive age. Given a nest may have 100 eggs, they will be hatched by the conservation project and sold to tourists for release at a rate of about 30 per average day. This means all these baby turtles safely get escorted to the water within a 3-4 day period. In nature many do not make it and often it takes a week to get from nest to water exposing them to danger every hour they are exposed on the beach,...
